Leroy & Louise

Leroy (left) & Louise (right)

Welcome Leroy and Louise!

Louise is a 13 year old jenny and the mother of 10 year old Leroy. She is a large standard donkey and he is a small mammoth.

They were surrendered for sanctuary with the promise they would be kept together.

They have not been handled for the past 10 years but they are not afraid of humans, they have not been mistreated, so they should get used to being handled with time and patience.

They have not been with any other donkeys or any equines since Louise was 3 yrs old and Leroy was a baby.

Meeting the new neighbors.

Fresh off the trailer and into the temporary holding area, they meet the new neighbors….mini-donks Dusty and Benji and Sonny the mule.

Once they have adjusted to their new home and their future herd mates, they will be turned out with everyone.

Learning to live with chickens stealing your food

Feeding time with the herd

Louise and Leroy have transitioned to living with the whole herd, having free range over the sanctuary grounds. They are getting used to all the different things, activity and other animals here.

Louise is always engaging with us, everywhere any of us are, she comes too. Leroy follows along.

Whenever she sees us, she brays…VERY loudly! Leroy usually joins in.

Louise will allow being touched all over…except her feet…and particularly enjoys having her ears scratched.

Leroy will allow his face, head ears and neck to be touched and rubbed, but any further back and he bolts. He is still very skittish and suspicious.

Whenever you are dealing with donkeys you are on donkey time. Things take as long as they take and that is decided by the donkey.
