Sadie’s Page

Special thanks to Corbin Dowling! She made Sadie’s (and Sugar’s) rescue possible!

Day 1 at Whisper Ranch 12/2/2019

Sadie is a paint mare approximately 18-20 years old. She came in with Sugar. The two mares had lived together for several years and were surrendered together.

We’ll post more about her once we have had her vetted and after we have had time to assess everything else about her.

Day 5 at Whisper Ranch 12/7/2019

Sadie on day 5 as a Whisper Ranch horse. Unlike her companion, Sugar, she was not terribly underweight and is gaining that back quickly.

We will have to watch her so she doesn’t gain too much. That is going to mean separating them for feeding because:

  1. She will not need to eat as often as Sugar
  2. AND Miss Sadie Mae eats twice as fast as Sugar does, then tries to steal the rest of Sugar’s feed.
  3. Sadie is very determined when going after Sugar’s food and unlike most horses, she is hardly deterred by our efforts to shoo her away so we have to be diligent until Sugar is finished.

Sadie is just a beautiful mare.

She is a true alpha. All the others in the herd recognize and respect that. She is lightening fast when she moves so the others here have learned that when she flicks that ear at you, you better move because if she has to escalate, she will close the gap faster than any of them can get out of the way.

She doesn’t put up with any crap from humans either. If she doesn’t want to do something you ask, you are in for some long negotiations and even then it might still be a “no”. That’s the thing about mares. They are very wise and discerning about what should or should not happen. They tend to view things from a “survival of the species” perspective. If she can’t see a good reason to do something, then it’s “no”…

BUT…really good mares, when treated with respect …and if they decide you are their “person”…will take care of you, with their life.
